Warts: Symptoms | Prevention | Treatment

Warts are small lumps or rough growths on your skin and are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are most commonly found in your feet and hands but you can get them anywhere. The HP virus is contagious and is often transmitted in the areas of public use, such as gyms and swimming pool etc.  They are more commonly found in children than adults.

Symptoms and Signs:

·  Small bumpy growth on the soles of the feet, they often have tiny black dots

·  Pain in the soles of the feet with standing or walking.

Prevention:

·  Avoid scrapping warts and wash your hands after touching warts as they can spread to other more vulnerable areas of your body

·  Don’t share towel, shoes or socks with someone who has warts

·  Keep your feet dry and change your socks daily

·  If you get a wart, try to cover it with a waterproof plaster as this will reduce the chance of passing it on to someone else.

Treatment:

·  Most of the warts disappear on their own, although it may take many months or even years. However, some warts won’t go away on their own and require treatment

·  Treatment options include over the counter medicines such as salicylic acid liquid or patches or more specific treatment by your doctor (dermatologist or podiatrist) such as burning, freezing with nitrogen, surgical removal or rarely removing with the laser.
