Stages of Migraine You Need To Know

Migraine headaches, often severe and recurrent, are described as throbbing or pulsing pain, typically on one side of the head.  Associated symptoms include weakness, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. However, despite the severity of the condition, migraines can be recognized and addressed before escalating.

There are stages of migraine headaches, which are prodrome, aura, headache, and postdrome.  Many people who frequently suffer from migraines can recognize the onset of the headache in the prodrome stage, where appropriate intervention can be utilized.  The prodrome stage starts around 24 hours before the beginning of the headache.  Symptoms in this stage are frequent urination, fatigue, frequent yawning, and mood changes.  The aura phase is generally recognized just before the headache, and the signs include flashing lights, bright lights, or weakness.  The actual onset of the migraine characterizes the headache stage. The postdrome phase is subsequent to the migraine, and many report severe fatigue and confusion.

Interventions in the prodrome phase can involve resting, drinking plenty of fluids, and adhering to the medication regimen indicated by the prescribing physician. An aura is rare and does not occur with every migraine, so it is vital to listen to your body when you sense a migraine.  While genetics play a roll in the occurrence of migraines,  the exact cause remains unknown. Prescription medication is available for migraines if they become frequent and other interventions are not successful. Regardless, when a migraine strikes, it is useful to rest, turn off all lights, and minimize noise disturbances. Although there is not a cure, tracking triggers, utilizing stress management techniques, and taking advantage of the other suggestions mentioned above could reduce migraine occurrence.
